MADE bike show hits Portland again. Custom and high end bikes galore. Crazy paint jobs, Mega ti finishes and whole 3d printed bikes!

With a huge old shipbuilding hangar full of custom bike builders from all over the world, MADE 24 was set not to disappoint. With so much stuff, I could just post a gallery of images and it wouldn’t do it justice. Where I will chime in is with a perspective of bike building in 2024.

With parts being parts and gravel bikes being, well gravel bikes. The notable thing at the show was Colour, Finish and Material. Yes, sure there was an entire 3d printed titanium bike, yes it is tech, yes it is cool. Great article by VELO here on that. Here are my takeaways about MADE 24 and hand-built bikes:

  1. Good color and finish is appropriate to market but also honest to the materials and process – in this context, texturing on 3d printed titanium stems and the specific look of anodised titanium with polish, brush and texture give a super high end feel. notable pics from No22 bikes and their high anodized execution
  2. Luxury or high tier is the care and consideration of the details, thats what separates the experience and the bike brands. Notes to Tommi on the beautiful bike and details.
  3. Theres something for everyone, but slice too thin and you are appealing to a niche market, slice too broad and your product becomes not specific enough to be appealing at all.
In this context the bike show was about hand crafted bikes, when sliced too thin they are esoteric dario pegoretti and untouchable, when addressed slightly broader , ie Mosaic they become attractive almost dream bikes for many, and within grasp. (hi end grasp)

on wit the pics:

I hope you enjoy the shots, Questions, feel free to drop a comment below and Ill get back to you.
